Nicaragua’s Mysterious Sinkhole
El Hoyo Volcano, standing 1,088 meters above the Pilas–El Hoyo Natural Reserve, is one of Nicaragua's most dramatic and adventurous volcanic destinations. Its most iconic feature is a perfectly round sinkhole near the summit—an enormous natural collapse pit that has intrigued explorers since it first appeared in aerial photographs in the 1940s. This unique formation, paired with El Hoyo's rugged volcanic terrain, makes the volcano instantly recognizable.
El Hoyo is also renowned for delivering some of the most breathtaking sunrise and sunset views in the country. From the summit, the sky ignites over Momotombo, Asososca Lagoon, and the sweeping León lowlands, creating unforgettable panoramas for hikers, horseback riders and overnight campers.
